Program for the Specialization of Mental Health Nurses The program through which nurses are specialized in mental health is operating at the PHT since 1990 under the supervision of the Nursing Services. The aim of the program is the prevention of mental illness, a healthy way of life, the specialization of graduate nurses with the direction of the hospitalization of mentally ill patients of every age in a psychiatric hospital, in the psychiatric department of a general hospital and in the community as well as the promotion of research ij the field of psychiatric nursing care. The duration of the program is an academic year and its main goals are to render the nurses capable of cooperating responsibly in a therapeutic multi-professional team, to contribute to the development and maintenance of a therapeutic community with proper information on issues of primary, social and nursing care. From 1990 to 2001 the program for the specialization of mental health nurses was attended by a total of 179 nurses (men and women).
Departmental training programs In the context of the constant training and education of the hospital's staff departmental programs are carried out on topics directly related to the interests and tasks of the scientific team of a unit. The programs are organized by hospital clinics, are in the form of seminars and are addressed to the whole staff of the PHT. They are addressed mostly to the staff of the nursing and medical services. The University Clinics A' and B' hold consistently departmental programs through the educational work carried out in the context of their operation.
Continuing Education Center (CEC) of the Psychiatric Hospital of Thessaloniki The Continuing Education Center started its training activity in 1997 in the context of programs by the Ministry of Health - Welfare. After two educational programs carried out in the first year, the implementation of a series of programs followed (13 programs in 1998 -99 and 2000 respectively) through which the opportunity was given to employees of the PHT and of other hospitals of the city as well as hospitals of other counties to be trained and educated.. The seminars carried out at the CEC of the PHT are addressed either to special staff (nursing, administrative, medical) or they involve cross-departmental programs. The lessons are held in a specially equipped with visual means teaching room of the PHT. The CEC, having already had five years of experience, is an innovation in the training of the nursing staff - especially in the field of mental health. It is a Continuing Education Center certified by the Ministry of health - Welfare.
