European Programs
at the Psychiatric Hospital of Thessaloniki

From the mid-80's until today, the Psychiatric Hospital of Thessaloniki, in order to proceed to the implementation of actions that are necessary for radical changes in the field of mental health, has already developed a series of services and units based mainly on the partial funding and the integration in the general planning of European Union programs. Since the beginning of the effort, the PHT stopped being an asylum closed behind fences, in the margins of society and its contradictions. The year 1984 was an important one when the European Economic Community sanctioned regulation 815/84 which served as the basis of the psychiatric reform in Greece. The development of services in the context of community psychiatry and the possibility of the development of units which were in the forefront for the Greek circumstances are due to some extent to the approval and implementation of European programs and involve residence in the community by former patients, building, equipment and operation of continuing education centers and centers for the rehabilitation of individuals with mental health problems, the formation of the Network of community services and their expansion. Until 1995 programs through regulation 815/84 were implemented while a total of more than 100 programs - actions have been and are being implemented by the PHT aiming at the social and professional reintegration of individuals with mental health problems.     Actions of training - education addressed to employees of hospitals of Thessaloniki and all the health services of Greece and are carried out by the Continuing Education Center (CEC) of the PHT
