Specialised Hospital
Psychiatric Hospital of Thessaloniki

The Psychiatric Hospital of Thessaloniki comprises a Specialised Hospital with extensive activities in the provision of services in the special sector of mental health, through the Network of Community Services operating in the county of Thessaloniki as well as through its operation as an educational institution.

This image has been formed by its activities in the psychiatric reform. Since the mid- 80's, the PHT has proceeded to a series of rehabilitative actions, creating employment positions, providing services aimed at formulating a quality level in the living standards for individuals with mental problems within the community where we all live and work, dispelling the so called stigma, the social prejudice, which nevertheless continues to exist. However, de-institutionalization is being put into effect and comprises a part of a constantly expanding process. The development of other Mental Health Units in the form of units of psychosocial rehabilitation (boarding homes, units of social - professional rehabilitation) is one of the main goals of the psychiatric reform which will result in the gradual reduction of hospital beds. Today, 940 individuals work at the PHT, of which 137 belong to the medical staff and 403 to the nursing services, staffing a considerably developed network of outpatient - community units. Since October 2004 it operates under the management of Dr. Constantinos Poulios.
Aiming at creating and operating Mental Health Units staffed by mental health professionals in the county of Thessaloniki and, in general, in the District of Central Macedonia, the PHT has a leading role in the materialization of the policy of the Ministry of Health and Care regarding mental health.
